It's been awhile since I was last active in the OHR community. I was hoping there were a few out there that would like to fill me in on what has happened lately... _________________ "Never sacrifice the thrills of living for the security of existence" |

Layers, sound effects, heated game design discussions (I'm guilty), Terrible Game Contests, Slime Salad, etc... _________________

On what has happened... since when? BTW, I don't recognise you in the slightest, except that "Idaho, USA" seems kind of familiar, I suppose. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if you didnt recognize me. I was an off and on contributer up until a couple years ago when I started college. I guess you could call it a hiatus. Anyway, I'm back now and I see that there has been a few new releases and some new features. Not to mention I noticed that the graphics capabilities seem to have expanded, or has everyone just gotten to be better pixel artists? _________________ "Never sacrifice the thrills of living for the security of existence" |

I checked your past posts, and you seem like a pretty cool guy.

And yeah, pixel art has definitely improved, especially with better pixel art tutorials and forums with more recent knowledge. (Protip: Selout can make your sprites ugly!) _________________

So I'm thinking maybe I just need to come back into this as if it's my first time ever using OHR. There may just be too many changes to try and pick them out... So lets give this a shot, where should I start. I'm talking about tutorials and such... I remember there were a few people who used to be very dedicated to writing up tutorials for people to help them learn. _________________ "Never sacrifice the thrills of living for the security of existence" |

Well the engine changes slowly, but I suppose that a couple years is a fairly long time. Still, you'll find most things the same, and the things that aren't aren't normally in any tutorial.
Tutorials? I learnt the OHR by following right through the HOWTO, making my first game. I have no idea how long ago it was written, but it's been many years since then, and the HOWTO is still nearly the same. There are new "3rd-party" HOWTO chapters on the wiki, but they are isolated, and just don't try to teach you broadly how to use the engine like the core HOWTO (and aren't engaging and fun like James' HOWTO was), but just how to do a particular thing. A HOWTO update would be great.
Besides them, I suppose there are many tutorials in various e-zines, but they're generally even more specific to certain tasks.
It's always seemed to me that the way to learn the OHR was to do the HOWTO for a fast sweeping introduction, optionally the plotscripting tutorial, and then slowly figure out everything not included in them, keeping yourself up-to-date by reading whatsnew.txt (that's where the feature list is) _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

So would it be a pretty accurate assumption that I could probably pick up where I left off? Granted I have to go back and remake the game I was producing, it kinda got corrupted right around the time I went on hiatus... _________________ "Never sacrifice the thrills of living for the security of existence" |

OHRRPGCE is really the same, just with more stuff and true compatibility with Windows and Linux, so yeah, you can pick up where you left off and awe at new things. _________________
