http://www.castleparadox.com/gamelist-display.php?game=916

Please test the game and report the bugs if you find any. I tried to make the game both enjoyable for me and the CP community, I hope it works out. Feel free to give suggestions.

I put more than 300 hours development time into it. I started with the development in February but could only work on it on weekends usually, but now I took vacation and literary worked 16 hours a day on it for 9 days and now it's finally big enough that releasing a demo is worth it.
(sidenote: I lost 10 pounds in the last 9 days)

Read the "special notes" in the included text file for more background information on the game (I tried to keep the spoilers as low as possible).

Well, all the important informations are in the CP game description and in the included text file so I won't repeat them here now. If you really want to know something feel free to ask in this thread, I'll reply for sure.

This is actually a well built game, so far, with good graphics to boot.

I won't comment on the game play, since I'm in no position to do so as Hedgemaze has several gameplay issues. I'll be back after I practice what I preach.

But yes, good job.

I plan to check it out here sometime within the next week and will get back with you on what I think.

I did a small update to the colour of the time bar, it's now a little bit better to see on dark monitors. I also added the description for the controls in the text file (this is more for external people that download the game).

I've played about an hour of it so far.

The graphics are not bad at all. I think the water is a little strange because it is not animated, but hey, whatever works for you.

I've basically been walking around outside trying to get up some money for supplies for the tower. Is that pretty much all you can do at that point?

I haven't really found the battles to be that difficult, even the one special battle that I encountered. You can just use the strongest attacks for a few fights and then run into town and rest for free. The special encounter thing is pretty neat though.

The biggest problem I see is the dialogue. I am not saying I am the best, because I am world's worst at structuring sentences. However, I noticed that you have several sentence fragments, missing punctuation, and spelling errors. Not to mention it is a little difficult to read because points are not spaced out at all, often making a "wall" of text.

I'll report back when I play a bit more.

Thanks for playing it.

It's just that I hate doing animations, it's hard to do them while still keeping the 'removing the grid'. For example I also enjoy doing monster graphics but I hate doing walkabout and battle sprites. I'll keep the tiles unanimated for now...

Until Fess reaches level 2 at least. After that you can either try to go for the special beach encounters (rare) to get a certain accessoire or start to explore the tower. There's no way to play through the tower in one go, it's always explore and then leave again. Once you know where to go it's much easier to get deep inside the tower. You just need to know when it's time to go out of the tower again (hint: save on the world map if you manage to leave the tower, it can be frustrating if the last battle in front of the village is a fateful encounter and you die). Oh and of course before you go leveling you can also try to find all the treasure chests in the village (some are hidden or hard to get to).

The normal battles are semi-difficult, you basically have the option to either use skills or fight them a bit longer, so you'll either lose more hp or more mp, which is no problem as long as you stay near town but will require resources once you decide to enter the tower. You can save a lot of resources by using the correct skills, though. The fateful encounters are designed so that if you use the right tactic you can easily win them with a fully healed party (no items needed), but if you use the wrong tactic it can get really difficult and even lead to game over. Correct tactic can be anything from attacking the correct monster first to using the correct skill first.

That's mainly because English isn't my native language and I'm also not really talented in storywriting and hate doing it at that. I'd need someone to write the dialogues for me. I read through all the texts at least 5 times and corrected all mistakes I saw. Are there really still spelling mistakes? In Germany we use rather long sentences while in English short sentences are more common, that's why I have some problems with keeping them short sometimes plus when we learn English the teachers basically have the attitude "Oh commas aren't so important in English so just don't place any if you are not sure" so I'm sure I'm missing various commas that could be placed.

Anyways I'd love to improve the dialogues, but for that you need to tell me WHERE the spelling errors and missing punctuation are. Just telling me that the dialogues suck doesn't really help me fixing it unfortunately. :-/

I was not aware that English was your second language. In that case, you have done a great job. Regardless, I plan on taking screenshots of stuff that is a bit strange and sending it to you once i'm done running through the game.

Hmmm. I'll play the game now and see if it's something I'd be interested in dedicating a little time to making better dialog. Happy

Or music. *wink wink*

I don't really want to change the dialogues too much now so the text boxes won't get mixed around. But fixing spelling errors and modifying sentences is okay.

Better music, eh?
Well, although my skills are formidable enough, I'm not the kind of musician who can pull a good song out of his arse on short notice. lol
Work called me in today, but maybe I'll have a little time to play before I go back in to help close shop... No, no, no...

/me Turns on the OHR and starts the game up*

Don't worry. You'll have some more feed back.

EDIT: This is a solid game. I especially like the attention to details and the cleverly hidden treasures so far. I can see how the text needs a little work.
Check your PMs, Rya.

Bump!

Honestly I'm curious, did anyone actually manage to finish this game? I didn't really get any solid feedback on it yet, except that the dialogues aren't so good and some compliments.

How do you like the dungeon design?

Gerania was reviewed in the October Hamsterspeak. You might take a look at that.
