I had been working on an old OHR project and just now remembered I had it. I'd say the last time I worked on it was around Ubersetzung. Anyway, I tried loading it up again to maybe incorporate OHR's new features, and it tells me that it's updating the RPG file; no problem. But then the screen goes blank; I'm assuming it's a palette problem. Any idea what I should do in order to fix my game?

Could be the title screen. Try pressing space maybe.

There were some major palette changes in the werewaffle release. It is supposed to convert old games cleanly, but maybe there is something unusual about your game that is preventing it from updating the master palette correctly.

Could you post a copy so I can try it out myself?

Here it is: http://www.sendspace.com/file/364v1w

(I know it sucks, but give me a break, this was from when I first got started with OHR.)

I've also tried other files that I worked on, and the same problem occured; however, when I created a fresh new file with an older version, then loaded it up with the latest, it worked fine.

For some reason, it appears that your master palette is number -6, which isn't a valid number. For the quick solution to start working on your game, you can get it to work by going into an older version (I used Voxhumana) and adding a new master palette until you get to 0. Then, set that one as default and save the game. It should work in the new editor.

However, this is definitely a bug and should be looked into.

When I updated my very first game with the most recent stable release I also had palette problems and had to remake (recolor) some tiles.

gen(genMaxPalette) was somehow set to -2

This caused a crash for me (which made it easy to find and fix). On the windows builds, bounds checking is disabled, so instead of crashing here it would corrupt some memory. I think that is why Calehay was seeing -6 rather than -2.

I have updated the source code to do some extra safety-checking on gen(genMaxPalette)

Try with a nightly build and sixmages.rpg should load cleanly.

Thanks for reporting the bug!

Do you still have a copy of the old file from before the upgrade?

Thank you, it loaded properly. As for the negative palette number, that was a bug that I remembered seeing, but didn't report because I didn't think it did any harm. Neutral

I'd need to look. It was my first OHR game "Side Ocean" which I send to you around... uh... 6 years ago? You probably don't have that anymore. I also send it to TMC some months ago when the palette problem occured. Maybe he still has it.

Oh, the one with all the solid black NPCs? I'll still have it somewhere, but don't know where yet. It's much older than 6 years, isn't it?

Yes that one. Remember you noticed yourself that the palette was messed up. You said "Hm the background is looking weird too" or something along these lines.

I wouldn't say much older than 6 years. I think it was the version that introduced 99 maps instead of 4.

That's about 10 years ago. There was a 4-map version released on October 4 1998, and a (not the first) 100 map version on June 18 1999. Games from 2002 should work completely with the latest version, as far as I know.
