|
|
Cube and I have gone ahead and made the forum changes mentioned in his previous thread.
We decided there was no real reason to only allow moderators to create or move threads onto the main page. Looking through the old Announcements forum, all topics created were newsworthy. We may need to tweek the main page display amount depending on how much activity we get. Worst case, we go back to the moderated Soapbox and all announcements end up in The Arcade.
As previously mentioned, I have archived the entire forum section prior to mangling, moving, and deleting threads. The archive is locked down with all old topics visible (including user groups) and can be found here.
I also went ahead and finally made links in the header area for Gamelist, Review List, Song List, All Journals, Site Stats, Search Gamelist, and the IRC Chat Room which once resided in a temporary forum description.
Please do let us know if you have any comments, concerns, or suggestions regarding this change.
Cheers,
~IM _________________

Wow, this place seems so...naked now.
But I'm really liking the mergers/splitters so far.
[Work, appreciated!]
Gee, did you guys actually judge every thread to decide where it should fit? o_o |

OMG! Stuff happened! After all the talk of change for, like, the last 2 months I figured it would never happen. |

This is nice. I appreciate not having to scroll through two pages of forum listings. _________________

Kudos!
EDIT: one question though, why is a post I made Friday May 4th 2007 at 9:15 AM at the top of the news on the main page? Seems like this thread should be there instead. |

Finally. Nice work! Every forum is 'above the fold' on 1024x768 now.
edit: one last suggestion: The Arcade needs some de-stickying. I have to scroll down on 1024x768 to see any non-stuck posts. Either destick a bunch of those threads or consolidate them.
edit: here is my opinion on what can be done
http://www.castleparadox.com/ohr/viewtopic.php?t=1046
Outdated because the review submitter already requires you to upload screenshots (also isn't it completely automated now?)
http://www.castleparadox.com/ohr/viewtopic.php?t=2385
Also outdated and no longer relevant
http://www.castleparadox.com/ohr/viewtopic.php?t=654
if reviews are completely automated, this post is also outdated
http://www.castleparadox.com/ohr/viewtopic.php?t=5962
this version has been out for a while so it can be de-stuck now
you could just make one central 'game design and engine resources' and link to a couple of the other stickies and de-stick them if you want, but those threads above should be enough to at least get a good amount of non-sticky threads above the fold |

Are OHRStat -- Excel Spreadsheet and Game still worth sticky status? I also feel Aeth's Stuff post can be unannounced.
James, your post was an announcement, hence it's position at the top of the main page. I have removed its announcement status, although now Meatballsub's HamsterWheel post is breaking my horrible table-based layout .
Not too worried about the main page look/feel, as it will completely change eventually...hopefully sooner than later.

After looking at it, I think you can also unstick the 'Game' post.
And I didn't realize the ohrstat thread's activity was over, so I think that can be safely unstuck, since the author can bump the thread if he makes an update to it.
edit: and i don't know how I missed 'stuff' but yeah, you should probably de-announce that since the site is moving towards not being 100% OHR. |

Heh, I thought the widening of the front page was intentional, and was going to complain.
Stickying long Soapbox posts is really going to make a mess of the front pag. I guess only short previews of posts should be shown on the main page.
Also, you can't actually view any of the threads in the archive. Is that intentional?
Also also, is anyone else having problems with being repeatedly logged out? Maybe it's because I was browsing around the archive. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Yeah, I only get the forum header in the archive - and logging in just redirects you to these forums, and you're still not logged in if you manually go to the archive.
I'm also getting logged out randomly aswell. |

My bad. After copying the database, I needed to update both the path to the board and the name of the cookie used, so you wouldn't be logged out of CP main when looking at the archive. I also had some permissions wrong, hence the lack of actual thread text (didn't notice as I was always logged in as an Admin). All should be fixed now. Please let me know if you continue to have issues.
Also, I forgot to mention and was reminded by a Guest, I have opened up the HELP! board to anonymous posting. We'll see how that goes for now. Hopefully not too many people end up posting while logged out (now that visiting the archive shouldn't disrupt your forum session).
Thanks for pointing this out, TMC.

Now that we have a general helpme board (as opposed to just plotscripting like the old one) where anonymous users can post, maybe we should link to it from the wiki as a semi-official (if James agrees) helpme board. I've been griping about the lack of a helpme board and possible solutions here:'User talk:Bob the Hamster#Wiki'. Getting people to add questions to the FAQ really doesn't work. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |
