Well, it's July 1st somewhere, so I'm officially opening the window now. Any new RPG, continuation to an old RPG, or remake of an old RPG is permitted for this contest, so design your game to your heart's content. Remember, the goal is to bring back the "Heart of the OHR," so if you need an idea what that means, play some of the OHR games circa 1998-2002 for some examples (but feel free to use today's plotscripting to make it modern). Operation: OHR is a good resource for finding out which games were released back then; Castle Paradox and The Hamster Wheel should have all of those games available for download.
Remember, the window closes the morning of December 1st, so you have five months from now to get your projects in order. Don't procrastinate if you want to stand a chance at winning.
Also, you may enter as many RPGs as you want, but you may only claim one bug ransom (unless James states otherwise). If you haven't claimed your bug or feature request yet, do it soon, because the probability of it getting squashed in time goes down with every day you wait, and the price of the ransom goes down with it.
You may post your entries in this forum, or the sister forum on Slime Salad. On December 1st, I'll scour each post for your entry, so don't worry about it getting swallowed up. I'll build a list of entries once I've found them all. You may update your game as many times as you want during the window, but only the version online as of December 1st will be counted. Posting early at least gives players a chance to form their opinions early.
Comments on early-release games are permitted here, but refrain from posting a score until December 1st. You are more than welcome to record your votes in private, though. This may make it easier to keep track of each game come voting time.
Be aware that voting will be based on an average score, so games that only get five votes won't be at any disadvantage to the ones that get twelve votes. Scores will be rated from 1 - 10, with 10 being the highest.
I think that covers it. Have fun. _________________ Progress Report:

I'm going to do something, seems like a great opportunity to finally learn OHR. Currently brainstorming on the overworld...

Alright, I'm definitely proceeding forward on Eternity Fragment. Maybe I'll finish before November 30, maybe I won't. I'm going to be working with a friend, and we'll probably have a cool team name by the time it's done.
Shooting for 8-bit visuals and audio, with very traditional gameplay. I think I'm happy with my overworld design, and the story is written up.
Since I'm still learning OHR, I really don't have any bugfixes or new features to request yet. Can I submit those later, or just enter for the fun of it? _________________

No rush on that. Maybe you will think of something you want while you are working on your game. |

I'm definitely in on this. This will give me a chance to use my OHR skills for an actual game rather than just small little things which I never release...
My feature request would definitely have to be ZIP file support or at least zlib compression for the files inside the RPG file. RPG files are starting to get large. Backwards compatibility can be easily kept by checking the files magic number. Even being able to play a ZIP compressed RPG file would be an awesome feature. I could care less of custom having this ability. _________________ Current project: Chronoboy Adventures

TMC already came up with a pretty nifty plan to add support for zlib compression to RPG files. The plan hasn't been formally written up yet, and I don't know how soon we are going to attempt it, but it will definitely happen sooner or later.
If I recall correctly, it is also part of a plan to make (some? most?) rpg data readable directly from the rpg file without having to unlump it to temporary files. |

Awesome, as compression would be a great asset to the RPG format.
While I was developing my game, I thought of a must have feature for the tile editor. As layers are now available along with transparency, I find it difficult sometimes to debug my transparency issues with my tiles I import, or even make in the tile editor. As the transparent color is -Black-, along with the other dark color I also use for a black, I am unable to tell which pixels of my tile are transparent or not. I find out by going back and forth from map edit mode. Having a new tool in tile editor to make non-transparent pixels say *jiggle* like how the map tiles do or even flash, would be great. If something similar is already added in, please let me know, as it would be much easier to edit transparent tiles.
Many thanks. _________________ Current project: Chronoboy Adventures

I'm glad someone finally requested this! I've been wondering why noone has complained about the GameMaker-like insane loading times!

We don't need a plan for that, there's only one decision to make (zlib streams vs. gzip).

Either all of them, or at least all the big ones, depending on exact implementation.
'Plan for faster game loading and upgrading'
I was making good progress last year, and was just about to enable it and stop unlumping music files when something distracted me. Maybe it was Christmas. Since then, I've acquired a new computer which takes less than two minutes to unlump Powerstick Man, so admittedly it's become less interesting to me. There are so many other things to do.

Changing the background colour would be best. We can't use the same palette trick as in the sprite editor, so we could instead add a hotkey to toggle between colours, but that would be really non-obvious. Suggestions? _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

'Tis why I use OHR instead of those "other guys", OHR is multiplatform, open source, in some cases more powerful than the competitors. I've only used GameMaker on the PSX/PS2. Heard mixed reviews about the PC versions.

You're thinking of RPG Maker, not GameMaker.
BTW, since your zlib compression request is basically rejected (but it's up to James to promise that I'll work on it; he's the one paying ;) as something that I don't expect to have time to do until early next year, you can suggest something else.
There are an awful lot of other people who haven't nominating a bug or feature request! _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Just giving everyone a reminder that we are now down to the last two months of this contest. Hopefully those of you who wanted to enter have started your games. I also hope those of you promising bugfixes are getting your game plans for fixing them ready. And I also hope that those of you planning to make T-shirts for the contestants have settled on a design by now.
Don't forget, two months fly by like a paycheck during bills season, so don't procrastinate if you plan to participate.
When your game is finished, you can advertise it here in the Heart of the OHR Contest thread.
Good luck.
Oh, and if you want to start sharing screenshots, you may do that in this thread, too. _________________ Progress Report:
